【内容摘要】从16世纪天主教传教士入华至1949年，传教士搜集了大量中国谚语俗语并形成了诸多论述。除却这些著作背后的宗教诉求外，传教士对谚语俗语的科学研究也作出了推进。以美国公理会来华传教士明恩溥的《汉语谚语俗语集》为例，该书不仅收录了多种类型的谚语俗语，还就谚语俗语研究中的诸多问题进行了探讨。相较之下，传教士群体在谚语俗语搜集研究方面的前瞻性与开拓之功，一定意义上也与五四知识分子形成了学术对话。

Study on Arthur Henderson Smith and Chinese Proverbs

Abstract: The missionaries to China collected a large number of Chinese proverbs and common sayings, and formed a great deal of discussions from the 16th century to 1949. Apart from religious appeals, the missionaries also promote the scientific research of proverbs and common sayings. For example, the Proverbs and Common Sayings from the Chinese which wrote by Arthur Henderson Smith who is an American congregational missionary has collected various types of proverbs and common sayings, and also made research on it. In contrast, the forward-looking and pioneering work of missionaries on proverbs and common sayings formed an academic dialogue with the intellectuals of "May Fourth".
