The Study of China in Japanese Folklore Studies: Focusing on the Turning Point of 1939

Wang Jing

Abstract: For the field of Chinese folklore studies today, Japanese folklore studies are not unfamiliar, and many Japanese folklorists are already old friends. However, what is the relationship between Japanese folklore studies and China since its establishment? From when did China become a subject of study and what characteristics did it have? What significance does the attitude towards China and the specific research hold for Japanese folklore itself and the development of Chinese folklore studies, as well as for the understanding of China by the Japanese and the understanding of themselves by the Chinese? This article focuses on the early establishment of Japanese folklore studies in the 1930s, using materials such as the influential magazines Folk Inheritance and Travel and Legends, attempting to quantify the relationship between Japanese folklore studies and China. It reveals the significant turning point in this relationship that occurred around 1939 and explores relevant materials, connecting them with the historical background and social trends of that time, analyzing the internal tensions within Japanese folklore studies, and striving to objectively and comprehensively understand the significance of this turning point.
