The Background and Characteristics of Chinese Folklore Series by Nagao Ryuzo
Wang Jing
Abstract: After the Meiji period, Japan’s study of China entered a new phase, involving various aspects including the study of folklore, and the emphasis on field investigations has become its distinctive feature. Overall, the study of Chinese folklore, its objects of interest and main contents in modern Japan from the Meiji period to the end of World War II, was indirectly related to territorial expansion, and colonial policies. Researchers did not participate in the war process or colonial rule in an organized way. As a result, the study of Chinese folklore in Japan maintained a certain degree of independence on the positive side, but also showed a considerable degree of individualism and fragmentation. Chinese Folklore Series (1940-1942) by Ryuzo Nagao can be considered one of the few systematic attempts to describe the panorama of Chinese folklore at that time, although the academic world had little understanding of it previously. By excavating archival documents from Japan and China, and combining them with other relevant materials, a comprehensive understanding of the background and process from planning to publication of Chinese Folklore Series and the exploration of its characteristics can help us deepen our understanding of China folklore study in Japan and its materials during this era.
