Study on Chinese Folk Prints Collected by Aoki Masaru

Liu Qian

Abstract: To deepen his understanding of Chinese culture, Japanese scholar Aoki Masaru (1887−1964) made several trips to China in the 1920s. During his stay in Beijing around 1926, he collected nearly a hundred Chinese folk prints, which later became precious collections in the Aoki Collection of the Nagoya University Library. These traditional folk prints, represented by paper horse and door gods, are essential component of Aoki Masaru’s research on Chinese customs and important physical materials and evidence of his contemplation of Chinese folk culture during the progress of ages. They reflect Aoki Masaru's academic interest in popular culture and provide detailed visual evidence for the transformation of New Year prints in the mid-1920s, offering abundant new physical materials for the study of Dongfengtai New Year paintings.
