Four Dimensions of the Research on Overseas Chinese Folk Relics:
Centered on the Collection of Chinese Costumes in the Metropolitan Museum of Art
Xiao Yuqiang
Abstract: There are many folk cultural relics in China collected overseas, which are very precious materials for folklore. There are many traditional costumes of China in the Metropolitan Museum of America. With the help of the definition of folk cultural relics and the horizontal comparison of these costumes with those in other anthropological and ethnological museums, it can be seen that most of China costumes in the Metropolitan Museum have the characteristics of folk cultural relics. If we want to study these costumes systematically, we need to trace back the spread history of costumes, explore their folk connotation and value, and explore the “return” path and innovative utilization methods of such cultural relics on the basis of reclassification. These four research dimensions can help us to know the social background of the loss of Chinese folk cultural relics overseas and the collection purpose of other foreign museums at that time, verify the accuracy of the reclassification of cultural relics collected in other countries, digitally preserve and disseminate rare folk cultural relics that have not returned overseas, arouse the attention of domestic people to the overseas collection of Chinese folk cultural relics, and enhance the national community awareness and recognition of folk culture of Chinese children at home and abroad.
