The Study of Opera-related Shops in the Thirteen Factories Street in Export Paintings

Chen Yaxin

Abstract: Among the diverse array of shops depicted in the bustling streets of the Thirteen Factories district in export paintings, there are numerous shops related to opera, including costume shops, banquet shops, temporary stage construction shops, drum and music shops, and musical instrument shops, which serve as both stores and workshops. Different costume shops focus on the management of different opera costume styles, with exquisite embroidery techniques applied to the garments, reflecting the pursuit of artistic refinement in Guangzhou’s theater productions at that time, possibly as a result of prosperous merchants with high demands for theater aesthetics. The presence of banquet shops also indicates the existence of tavern performances during the Jiaqing era. Costume shops also engage in the production of paper sculptures, divine robes, and banners, while drum and music shops cater to ritual activities such as deity processions and offerings. The temporary stage construction shops are specifically designated for the construction of ritual pavilions and stages, reflecting the prevalence of ceremonial theater during that period. These findings provide new insights into the overall ecology and operational models of theater during that time. The shops along the Thirteen Factories Street were the most accessible places for foreigners to purchase goods, thus the flourishing opera business in this area had an impact on the dissemination of opera culture to foreign audiences.
